Downtown Charlotte

Save

Shook Kelley eveloped, in concert with Mr. Lauren B. Askew, FAIA, a concept plan for a unique combination of a shopping mall and a traditional downtown district for The Rouse Company’s attempt to land major department store.

Downtown Charlotte

The Rouse Company is arguably one of America’s premier developers of retail property. Their holdings include Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston and HarborPlace in Baltimore, as well as many other center city projects.

The 1,200,000 square foot project included a six-block underground parking structure over which would continue the traditional grid of the city. Shook Kelley’s conceptual plan consisted of the unique combination of a shopping mall paired with a traditional downtown district featuring multi-family housing and a hotel. The project was abandoned when the department store made clear their intention to select a suburban site for their one regional location.
