Kapalua Central Resort
Kapalua resort, located on the Hawaiian Island of Maui, is but one of the elements of a 22,000 acre estate owned and managed by Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc. However, the resort is the most visible commercial element on the estate. Fittingly, the new village is planned to become the “Outpost” and the main, shared experience for all associated with the resort.
Building upon a strategic business plan—or Brand Manual—created by Shook Kelley for the resort, the planning team sought to bring together a number of disparate elements, and to solve a dysfunctional road network. Overall, Shook Kelley's design of Kapalua Resort is manifested around respected native Hawaiian traditions, incorporated realities of changing climatic conditions typical of a windward orientation, and created an aspirational setting that reflected most people’s view of Paradise.
